MUAY THAI

Sparring / Competition Training

Sparring is offered at classes if you have been training for a while, there is no sparring for beginners until a basic level of training has been achieved and only then would you spar if you wish to. Many Thai boxers train purely for fitness and well being, many wish to pursue grades and some enter into the exciting world of sparring.

There is an excellent sparring class and conditioning session on every Sunday at the Wossobama Gym from 12-2pm with champion Thai Boxer Ally Smith, Scottish, British and K1 champion.

We run regular sparring competitions (Interclubs) so as all students get a chance to experience a competitive event. All contestants wear full shin, body and head protection (Amateur) and every effort is made to ensure that all adults and children have an opponent of similar ability. We have also held best ritual dance competitions at these events to ensure that all our junior students can become involved what ever there level.

Muay Thai is a fighting art and we have a large stable of junior and senior fighters. No individual is ever cajoled into fighting and just like adults very few ever get to fight full contact Muay Thai (only 1 - 2% compete) Those that do are subject to rigorous fight training to ensure that they are properly trained to compete in the ring and that no short cuts are ever taken on safety when anyone competes. The S.T.B.A. are working with other Muay Thai coaches to compile Scotlands first ever junior and senior fighter rankings. Mr Guy Ramsay of Caledonian Muay Thai and Griphouse Gym is in charge of fighter rankings in Scotland.

We attend fight competions all around the Uk, Europe and attend the World Championships in Thailand each year we also take teams over to train in Thailand the home of Muay Thai. Chris Shaw (Wossobama) won a bronze medal in 2002 at the world championships in Bangkok.

Wossobama Gym has produced over 20 champions; Scottish, British and  K1, many juniors as well as seniors.
