Kids Learn to Spar

DETAILS

KIDS LEARN TO SPAR classes are designed for children who are 5 - 12 years of age and do not need to have attended any form of prior training. These sessions are for kids at any level who enjoy active and energetic workouts. See Kids Beat the Bullies and the Kids Learn to Spar Class Times for further info and prices.

Sparring sessions cater for all juniors, male and female and padded safety equipment is always used. Juniors spar lightly and under what’s called junior amateur rules, there is no head shots permitted at all and all participants wear safety head guards, body armour, shin guards and gloves.

Any junior attending should have their own shin guards and gloves and all other safety gear is provided. Visit the Wossobama Gym SHOP for any equipment required. Kids boxing gloves start at £9.50 and shin guards are only £8.50 per set. You can obviously buy fancy leather boxing gloves and shin guards depending on your budget.

SAFETY

Sparring is built around safety and all children workout at their on pace and ability so that they can learn and enjoy the exciting sparring sessions.
Junior champions assist and work directly with each child helping and encouraging them with their technique. Games, skills and drills are also put to practice which orientates juniors within the boxing ring environment.

Many kids love sparring as it is a fast paced workout filled with laughter and learning!

All Wossobama Gym and S.T.B.A. (Scottish Thai Boxing Association) Muay Thai coaches are subject to checks by Disclosure Scotland and all our coaches have attended Child Protection courses to ensure that all our junior students are taught safely.

We also have two child protection officers and a child protection document which parents can view at any time.

INSTRUCTORS

All coaches have achieved instructor level by way of Grading to a high standard, 1st Degree Red armband or above (equal to 1st Dan black belt) and have passed a teacher training certified course as well as having extensive practical experience. All contestants wear full shin, body and head protection (Amateur) and every effort is made to ensure that all adults and children have an opponent of similar ability. All participants receive a certificate and a martial arts trophy.

We have also held best ritual dance competitions at these events to ensure that all our junior students can become involved what ever there level.

We have a large stable of junior and senior fighters who have competed around the world. No individual is ever cajoled into competing (only 1 - 2% compete). Those that do are subject to rigorous training to ensure that they are properly trained to compete in the ring and that no short cuts are ever taken on safety when anyone competes.

The S.T.B.A. are working with other Muay Thai coaches to compile Scotlands first ever junior and senior fighter rankings. Mr Guy Ramsay of Caledonian Muay Thai and Griphouse Gym is in charge of fighter rankings in Scotland.

We attend fight competitions all around the Uk, Europe and attend the World Championships in Thailand, each year we also take teams over to train in Thailand the home of Muay Thai.

Chris Shaw (Wossobama) won a bronze medal in 2002 at the world championships in Bangkok when he was 12 years old, Chris was ranked third in the world in 2002. Chris is now holder of 2 Scottish and 1 British title.
