Shelagh McLennan, 45
When I first met Alan Currie on my induction session he said to me, "The body is meant to be used. This exercise routine will help in all aspects of your life, from hanging out the washing to cleaning the oven." As a mum of four boys and primary teacher, I could certainly appreciate what he was saying, and the tongue-in-cheek way in which he said it!
I explained what I wanted from my time in the gym and that my time would be limited. Ally Smith, my trainer, chose exercises which would maximise my time at the gym and would let me use different sets of muscles at each session.
He gave me three different programs to start me off, and demonstrated each exercise and how to use the equipment. It didn't stop after the induction session. He made sure that I had heard what he'd said, as he checked up when he saw me a few days later, and gave me some additional tips. This was just great! I had been to another gym before, and the staff had been really unhelpful, and I felt they just saw me as another walking "tied in contract" with no way out and no reason to impress or help me any more...
Wossobama was different - I was so impressed with Alan's friendly professional advice. He certainly knew his stuff.
The exercises were tailor-made to suit my individual needs. The routines are very compact - it took me only 20 minutes to complete the routine.
Ally also gave me great advice in how to strengthen my painful knees I honestly thought i would have knee pain for life. However Ally immediately diagnosed what the problem was and gave me exercises to strengthen the outer muscles on my legs. This has saved me a trip to the doctor, who would probably have only prescribed painkillers.
My knee pain has now gone completely, and my energy levels have increased and I feel in a great positive mental state. Not bad for two weeks.....
The location of the gym is ideal is also great for a quick jog along the low green as an end of session cool down!
I now feel fit, healthy and back on track! My jeans now fit better, and I feel so much more confident!
Ally McBride, 16
My name is Ally McBride. I am 16 years old and I train 4 days a week. When I’m not training I like to watch TV. I have trained for 7 years and participate in Thai Boxing.
My instructor is Alan Currie, who is a constant inspiration. Ally Smith is the manager and a fitness fanatic – what he doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing.
All the staff are very friendly
The main things I like about the gym are the company, the training, and the fully refurbished CV and fitness facility.
A couple of years ago, my friend from training, Chris Shaw was well conditioned but didn’t have a lot of muscle. Now he has been doing weights and is in excellent shape.
Wossobama is the place to be. Whether you’re just into fitness or martial arts. Everyone will be made to feel at home, and the membership fees are very cheap.
Chris Shaw, 16
My name is Chris Shaw, I’m 16, train 5 days a week, and teach Thai
Boxing twice a week. My training includes weight
training, as well as Muay Thai. I
also like to hike and play football.
I have been training since I was 4 years old (ie 12 years), and am
a Scottish and British Champion Thai Boxer.
The staff are all very helpful and have helped my out a lot. They
constantly find ways to challenge your ability and push your fitness
beyond what you think possible.
This has helped me to attain a very good level of fitness, which has
in turn helped me become a good fighter.
My instructor is Alan Currie – he is a huge inspiration.
There is a wide availability of classes both in Wossobama, and around Ayrshire. The classes have a really great, friendly atmosphere, and if you come you’re sure to make friends.
I really like the training, the instructors, facilities and the banter
at the gym.
The prices are very affordable, and considering the
experience of the instructors is very cheap.
There is a group of us who started training young: and have progressed through junior and instructor grades, and also into Thai fights.
This has only been possible because of the support and knowledge of the instructors. I am now a junior instructor, and hope to be able to continue to instill the knowledge and ethos of Muay Thai into others.
As I have trained for 12 years, I feel that it has made me a stronger and more confidant individual; and that if I wasn’t a member of the gym I wouldn’t have achieved as much as I have – including the Scottish and British titles.
Clair Ronald, 36
My name is Claire Ronald, I am 36 years old and my hobbies include Thai
Boxing, rock climbing, hill walking and mountain biking.
I have trained regularly for about 7 years; using facilities like Thai
classes, 1-to-1 training sessions with a personal
trainer and the gym at Wossobama.
I have just completed my red grade (1st Dan).
The staff have a relaxed, friendly way about them, and interact with
well with clients of all ages. All the staff train, so they
have practical experience and can vary the programme/information to
suit the individual.
In general they are friendly, approachable and enjoy a good banter.
The class constantly changes so you are always challenged; and the instructors training you know what they’re doing as they all train in other classes, and don’t need to rely on course sheets.
Once the instructors get to know you, they can pick up on small changes you make/need to make and keep you motivated. All the instructors are very approachable.
The classes are varied, so there is always something for everyone.
The gym itself is normally fairly quiet, so you never need to queue for equipment. Price is very affordable compared to what my friends pay for just a gym, and because it is a standing order, not direct debit, you stay in control.
The female class have a regular crowd who all attend (along with other waifs and strays), and have all improved in one way or another. They are all fitter and motivate each other to grade and push themselves.
Over the years I have had numerous attempts at going to the gym or
aerobic classes, and always lost motivation. I have never stuck
at anything as long as I have been doing Thai – and the friendliness
of the instructors has been key to this. The class is never boring
and no matter how fit you get it, it constantly pushes you that bit
further.
I have surprised myself, as I have kept going at my gradings and that
is down to the support, enthusiasm and knowledge of the instructors.
Gavin Campbell, 9
I am Gavin Campbell, and I am 9 years old. I train at Thai Boxing in 4 classes a week and also have 1 private lesson a week. I also enjoy Gymnastics.
I have trained for 3 years and really enjoy it. The things I like best are Alan, helping at classes, grading, training and all my friends at the gym.
The classes are fun and the instructors are supportive. Alan has a great sense of humour. The instructors give me confidence and make me feel special.
All the staff are helpful and friendly. Alan is good looking (written under duress!), as are Ally Smith and Davie (I am now on the payroll at Wossobama!!).
If you are new you get lots of help and encouragement. The classes are fun, and the people friendly.
The prices charged are affordable, and the monthly class saver is really good value.
Jake Donnachie has achieved a lot and is very talented. I look up to him and would like to try to achieve what he has.
I love going to the gym. It has given me lots of confidence and made me feel good about myself. My instructor Alan Currie has taught me lots, is very encouraging, has re-built my confidence and makes me laugh.
Isla Campbell, 7
My name is Isla Campbell, and I am 7 years old. I train at Thai Boxing in 3 classes a week and also have 1 private lesson a week. I also enjoy Gymnastics and Highland dancing.
I have trained for 2years. The things I like best are training, grading, friends, classes, armbands, Ally Smith and Alan.
The classes are fun and the instructors are supportive. The instructors are funny and great at training. They make me feel special.
Everybody is nice and helpful. The staff are all supportive
and friendly.
If you are new you get lots of help and encouragement. The classes
are fun, and the people friendly.
The prices charged are really affordable, and the monthly class saver is really good value.
Jake Donnachie has achieved a lot and is very talented.
Joanne Calderwood trains very hard and is a very good fighter.
I really enjoy going to the gym. I have a lot of fun. It has given me a lot of confidence. My instructor, Ally Smith, is very encouraging and supportive. I have achieved a lot with his help and teaching.
James Crichton, 29
I’m James Crichton, I am 29 years old and I train 5 days a week. I have been training for nearly 2 years, and my programme consists of weights, cardio, and some Thai Boxing.
The staff are all helpful, and they know about exercise in-depth, so you can always ask them for help.
Ally Smith is very knowledgeable and insists that you train to his
standards – which is very hard!!
The things I like about the gym are that it is affordable, there are
no egos to massage, you are always educated, the staff take an interest
in you and Alan’s jokes!!(?).
Compared to other gyms Wossobama is very affordable.
ME!!! – I’m thinner!!!
Joining Wossobama has improved my life!!!!!
Rikki Vallance, 12
My name is Rikki Vallance and I am 12 years old. I train 4
times a week, and also have a private lesson once a week. In
my spare time I like to read, read and read!! I also play Playstation
1, 2 or PSP – anything really.
I am KC (cool, eh?) Vallance and I’m 8 years old. I also
train 4 times a week and have 1 private lesson. It’s cool
and we both love it!! I like to laugh, run about, play football,
go to the cinema, draw, colour in and watch TV. Anything really,
except go to sleep!
We have been training for nearly a year and Rikki has trophies for
his first fight. We both have loads of medals and are about to
go for red grade.
Alan and his staff are very encouraging, speak nice to us, hate bullying, have a laugh and teach everybody to respect. They know how to bring you out of your shell.
The staff motivates you with encouragement which makes you believe in yourself. They are all excellent, very professional and approachable. There is nothing they don’t know about fitness having reached their goals; and they remain dedicated. They are always available to help and work hard to promote a friendly and respectable environment.
We both started off doing the ‘Beat the Bullies’ class, but now Rikki has moved into the adult class. KC still goes, and this class has given us loads of confidence to be able to walk away from trouble and not stand and take it. Rikki has stood up to one of his bullies- the boy walked away. That particular bully stays away now after years of trouble, and all without lifting a hand!!!!
The gym is expertly run with a friendly atmosphere. There is
always help at hand to give advice and the gum members are serious – they
are there to work, not pose, so you can feel at ease whatever your
fitness level.
The prices they charge have got to be the best around, with no ties
to a contract and very reasonable standing order offers – you
can’t lose.
Since joining the gym we have both become a lot fitter than we were. We train almost every night and love it, although it is hard work it’s fun too!! We never thought we would be as good as this and nearly at red bands in less than a year.
What more can we say?! We wish we had come here years ago – we would be better than we are now, but with the help everybody gives us we can only get better.
It’s a great environment to belong to, we have a laugh and respect
each other. Nobody pushes you to do grades or fights, but if
you want to do it the staff help you as much as they can.
It’s a great place, so what are you waiting for?? SEE
YOU THERE!!
